Smoke detectors credited with saving family from overnight house fire

NEW HANOVER COUNTY N.C. (WECT) – A family and their pets escaped from an overnight house fire on Oneida Lake Road in New Hanover County.

According to New Hanover Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Benjamin Bobzien, crews arrived shortly after midnight Thursday morning to a fire in the family’s garage.

“Occupants were alerted by smoke detectors, which really echoes the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home. It really contributed to keeping them safe,” Bobzien said…
