The Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research, the Houston Zoo and the Galveston Island Park Board returned 100 sea turtles to the Gulf of Mexico days after they’d been rescued from the weekend freeze.
About 150 turtles were rescued during the arctic blast, said Chris Marshall, director of the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research at Texas A&M University. Exposure to the cold left the turtles stunned — a condition in which sea turtles become weak and inactive, according to the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration. Unfortunately, 52 turtles didn’t make it, Marshall said.
