Pierce County animal rescue sees rise in pet surrenders after fee hike at humane society

PIERCE COUNTY, Wash. — An animal rescue based in Pierce County is seeing an increase in pets surrendered by its owners.

Horn Creek Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue, says the pet surrender issue has gotten worse after the Humane Society of Tacoma and Pierce County raised its pet surrender fee by hundreds of dollars.

Diana Van Dusen with Horn Creek Rescue, which does not charge for a pet surrender, said, “90% of the animals that we get that were that are left abandoned or owner surrender, reached out for help and had been turned away by Tacoma Humane Society.”…
