Winter storm warning expanded to Lowcountry counties for Saturday and Sunday

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A winter storm warning has been expanded to include much of the Lowcountry ahead of expected snow and dangerously cold temperatures over the weekend.

The daytime temperature on Saturday will be in the upper 30s and lower 30s on Sunday. Overnight temperatures will be in the teens Saturday night through Monday morning, with even colder wind chills into the single digits possible.

“I want to point out that this is a really cold, dry air mass that this warm, moist air is working over. So, that means we’re also looking at dry snow in the Lowcountry,” said Storm Team 2 Meteorologist Jed Christoph. “(The snow) will easily be able to fly around because of the wind, reducing visibility out there.”

Christoph explained this won’t be the typical Lowcountry snow we have seen in the past, where it is heavier, wet snow- this will be lighter, drier, and fluffier.

An upper-level low diving across the southeast is pulling in significant cold, dry air to the southeast. At the same time, it is forecast to spawn an area of low pressure offshore that will wrap moisture around it, and on top of our cold, dry air, meaning snowfall across the Lowcountry…
