Rydell High School in Southern California provides the setting for the musical “Grease,” while the James Pitt Theater at Rancho Cotate High School was the setting for Technology High’s presentation of this famous musical. The story follows the lives of middle-class teenagers dealing with love, peer pressure and the search for identity.
Age old conflicts play out: conformity and rebellion; personal identity opposes peer pressure; gender roles and expectations; and teenage sexuality and reputation. The main characters, Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski, struggle with their new-found relationship and their group identities. Set in the 1950s, “Grease” deals with issues that are timeless.
So many talented performers, the show was double cast, one crew called “The Dropouts” and the other “The Drive-ins.” Miss Lynch, the stern traditional teacher was played by Willow Mullen and Ashlynn Hogan. The bubbly Patty Simcox was portrayed as the typical cheerleader stereotype by Candace Rottman and Abigail Wilson. Tyler Scullion and Jeremiah Johnson delivered the perfect Eugene Florczyk.
