SUGAR LAND, Texas — Sugar Land police say a sharp-eyed officer and a simple traffic stop led to a major stolen mail bust this week. What started as a suspicious vehicle on the road early Wednesday morning has turned into a case investigators believe may have prevented thousands of pieces of mail from being taken.
Around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sugar Land officers pulled over a vehicle displaying paper license plates. Those paper tags are no longer legal in Texas, and that immediately raised a red flag for the officer who made the stop. As one official put it, when officers see those plates now, they generally understand they are often associated with criminal activity, so they took a closer look.
