The Texas TV personality making meteorology a meme-worthy ‘trauma response’

Most, if not all, TV meteorologists have shifted their strategy by now to include weather updates on social media. But not everyone does it like CBS Austin meteorologist Avery Tomasco, who delivers the forecast with a signature sense of humor.

Ahead of the recent winter weather that overtook much of Texas and other parts of the country, Tomasco was poking fun at the Lone Star State’s noncommittal seasons — “Fool’s Spring,” “garden-killing freeze lol,” “preheating the oven,” “ERCOT meltdown,” “False Fall” and the “Devil’s Basement,” among others — on social media. That’s pretty typical for the meteorologist, who told MySA he uses memes as “the spoonful of sugar that helps the message go down a little smoother.”

A Texas A&M Aggie, Tomasco worked in Abilene before heading to the Capital City. However, his passion for the weather started young; Tomasco said one of his first memories of catching the “weather bug” happened when sleet started falling out of the blue during a deer hunting trip with his father when he was about 10 years old. These days, Tomasco’s comedic “brand” as a meteorologist is his way of helping viewers to understand the real-life impacts of weather, but he said he didn’t always do things this way…
