Ann Arbor elementary cancels classes after threat suspect is released on bond

Officials with Ann Arbor Public Schools canceled classes Friday at Haisley Elementary School after an 18-year-old charged in a threat against the school was released on bond this week, prompting safety concerns from staff and families.

The district announced the closure Thursday evening, which came in a message to school families citing “a very high number of staff absences reported.” The district’s website indicated that Community High School and the A2 STEAM program were also closed Friday as officials were “unable to ensure staffing for a safe learning environment.”

Ann Arbor police initially responded Jan. 16 to Haisely Elementary after receiving reports that a teen had posted a threatening note on a classroom window during afternoon dismissal and had threatened to harm people at the school with a firearm. Officers searched the suspect’s home but did not find any weapons, and no students or staff were harmed…
