Loyal congregants keep 117-year-old church going but merger looms

Convis Union United Methodist Church, located at 18990 12 Mile Road, was built in 1909 and now, 117 years later, its future is uncertain for the 18 faithful congregants, many of whom have been attending for more than half a century.

“The history of this beautiful church amazes me on all the wonderful things they have done for our community over the last 117 years,” said Kathy Barrus Armstrong, who has been transporting one of its members to worship services, Roberta Rocho.“I have become close to this wonderful group of senior citizens and my heart hurts to know they will be divided up. This has been their church and their home with God. Some will be without a place to worship God due to their age, transportation, location (distance) and the fear of the unknown. Some will move on with the merge that they are talking about doing, and some will move on to find a new home with God.”

The church’s pastor is Janet Wilson, the pianist is Ester Rayburn and Ron Buckmaster does the Liturgist Readings every week…
