Lexington Cajun restaurant catches flak for operating after winter storm

LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Staff members with Bourbon n’ Toulouse in Lexington took to social media Friday morning to defend local restaurants that opened while ice still covered many city roads following last weekend’s storm.

“This is one of the toughest industries to turn a profit in and this is the slowest month of the year for all of us,” members of the Cajun restaurant wrote around 10 a.m. on Jan. 30. “We asked our staff if they wanted to reopen on Wednesday because we knew without a doubt that was the right thing to do for them.”

Restaurant workers said no one was forced to return to work in the aftermath of the storm, which proved deadly in Fayette County and across Kentucky. As of Jan. 29, 12 people have died from weather-related causes.

“Not everyone is retired. Not everyone is salaried. Not everyone can financially skip a week of income,” workers wrote. “Congrats to you if you fall into those three categories, but maybe take a step back and check your privilege.”…
