Webster, N.Y. (WHAM) — A 63-year-old woman is speaking out after nearly losing $1,800 in a gift card scam — a scheme experts say is increasingly targeting older adults.
Kelly McDonald of Webster said the incident happened back in December while she was having trouble with her new laptop. A pop-up message appeared on her screen directing her to call a phone number for help. The person on the other end claimed her computer had been hacked.
“They scared the heck out of me,” McDonald said. “They said you need to get your money out of your bank, all of it, and go to a store and buy an Apple gift card with all your money.”…
