GALLERY: Washoe County students walk out district wide to protest ICE enforcement

Students across Washoe County took part in a district-wide walkout Friday as part of nationwide protests tied to recent federal immigration enforcement operations and shootings involving ICE in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Washoe County School District says it is aware of the potential for students to leave class and acknowledges the importance of student voice when it comes to local, national, and international issues. District leaders say they encourage students to express their thoughts and opinions in peaceful and constructive ways, while respecting the viewpoints of others.

However, WCSD emphasized that its top priority remains educating students without disruption to instruction. District officials say students are expected to attend school, and under Nevada law, those who participate in a walkout will be marked tardy or absent depending on how long they are out of class.
