1 month after her cousin was killed, a Beech Grove woman is pushing for greater domestic violence protections

INDIANAPOLIS — Heather Kirlin still has a few leftover purple ribbons made for her cousin’s funeral and worn to stand against domestic violence.

Her cousin, 44-year-old Jeri Mains, died Dec. 28 after her husband, Cecil Mains, allegedly shot and killed her. IMPD responded to their home in the 8100 block of Meadow Bend Lane, near Shelbyville and South Franklin roads on the southeast side of Indianapolis, that afternoon and found her in the driveway.

According to court documents, a 911 caller said their father had a gun and shot their mother, then fled in a pickup truck…
