Fire officials offer safety tips after space heater sparks blaze

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) – Officials are urging residents to operate space heaters safely after a Thursday night house fire.

“Last night, our firefighters responded to a house fire that was later determined to be caused by a space heater,” Chesterfield Fire and EMS said in a social media post. “Fire investigators determined the heater was too close to combustibles and was plugged in an extension cord.”

Combustibles means any regular materials in your house that could catch on fire, such as furniture or other clutter.

“It just gets to a point where that material reaches its flammable temperature and you know it could start smoldering … at some point in time it’s going to reach a point where it catches on fire,” Captain Joe Harvey, deputy fire marshal with Chesterfield Fire and EMS, said…
