On Friday morning, Jan. 30, after a winter storm delayed the count by a week, volunteers gathered in the Community Services area at the Simms Municipal Building to take place in the Point in Time (PIT) count to document the number of homeless in Amarillo.
According to Sheila King, grant monitor for the City of Amarillo Community Development Department, the count is mandated by the federal government but also assists the city to keep track of the people experiencing homelessless in Amarillo to see if they have adequate facilities.
Those who participate in the PIT count are given goody bags that contain Pocket Pals, which are guides to resources available in Amarillo with phone numbers and addresses of shelters, healthcare facilities and transportation available to those in need.
