Scam: Fake towing service targets stranded drivers during winter storms , VBSCO warns

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. — A streak of winter storms throughout West Michigan has left cars in ditches and tow companies stretched thin, and now law enforcement is warning drivers about a new scam targeting people stranded on the side of the road.

The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office (VBSCO) said scammers are posing as “local” tow truck companies online and then demanding large upfront payments from motorists in distress.
