Iowa is a wide-open state, and that means it’s full of great parks and forests that provide many opportunities for hikers to explore. But surprisingly, one hidden gem of a hike isn’t located in a rural area—but around the city of Fairfield. This mid-sized town of just under 10,000 people, located in the southeast region of the state, is home to the Fairfield Loop Trail. This 16-mile path is an easy trail well-suited for hiking but especially popular with cyclists thanks to its wide-open and gorgeous views. It also has a unique feature: an extensive collection of public art created by local students. So get on your bike, explore the best hiking trail in Fairfield, Iowa, and prepare for a hidden gem of an adventure that has helped to put this charming town on the map.
That, of course, may be overstating it a bit, as Fairfield has plenty of history, including historic structures and homes dating back to Iowa’s pioneer days. More recently, the town has gained fame as the home of Maharishi International University and its nearby Maharishi Vedic City—places that exist in the heart of Iowa corn country that folks from outside of the Hawkeye State may be surprised to learn about.
Notwithstanding these notable features of the town, the 16-mile Fairfield Loop Trail, one of the most unique trails in Iowa, definitely contributes to the character of the community. A large portion of the terrain through which the trail winds is wetlands, which helps to provide some lovely views over the water, as well as wildlife sightings.
Other segments of the trail pass through deeply wooded areas, as well as several small parks with shelters and gazebos, which make perfect spots to stop for a break or even a picnic, if you plan in advance.
Personally, I think the highlight of the trail is definitely Louden Bridge, which offers amazing views, as well as a surprise for visitors who pay attention to details. The bridge boasts 171 ceramic art plaques celebrating the vibrant community. They’re all designed by local art students, and they add an extra splash of color to your hike or ride.

Fairfield is also home to one of Iowa’s most historic buildings: a pre-civil war log cabin built in the 1830s—one of the last remaining pioneer-era buildings in Iowa.
