An 11-year-old boy died following a sledding incident in Virginia, according to authorities and loved ones.

Officers were notified about an unresponsive juvenile just before midnight local time on Tuesday, Jan. 27, Staunton Police Sgt. Christopher Ammons confirmed to PEOPLE in a statement.
