GREENE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — The Tennessee Department of Health confirmed one weather-related fatality due to the winter weather that began impacting East Tennessee on Friday, Jan. 30.
The death was reported for Greene County. This is the second winter weather-related death confirmed by the Department of Health in East Tennessee; all of the fatalities have occurred in Middle or West Tennessee. The previously reported deaths were all due to the winter storm that impacted the state last weekend, starting on Jan. 23.
Knoxville Weather: Extreme cold temperatures with slick roads
Much of East Tennessee is under a Winter Storm Warning through 1 a.m. Sunday with frigid temperatures and snow showers in the forecast. Several area schools have also already cancelled class on Monday due to the winter weather.
As of 9 a.m. on Jan. 31, more than 55,000 customers remain without power statewide. The majority of these outages are in Middle or West Tennessee. Tennessee National Guard and Division of Forestry personnel continue assist power restoration efforts by clearing downed trees for utility crews and emergency responders.
