Feb. 1, 1864 — A Union military commission trial begins at Helena. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas entry on the Trial of West Bogan reports his three-day murder trial before a military commission began Feb. 1, 1864 in Helena. Bogan, a slave, was being whipped when he killed his subjugator with an ax. The commission found Bogan acted in self defense.
