A week after the winter storm that blew through Texas, the Houston/Galveston arm of the National Weather Service is reminding people that the cold season isn’t over just yet. Another confirmed freeze is on the way, touching down later this evening, but it won’t last for long. True to Texas’ up and down nature, warmer weather is just around the corner for many parts of the state.
The NWS has upgraded its Freeze Watch to an official Freeze Warning as of Saturday, Jan. 31, predicting that temperatures in southeast Texas (including the Houston metro) will fall to an ice cold average in the 20s starting at 9 p.m. and lasting until 9 a.m. the next day. In North Texas, where many are still dealing with the lasting snow and ice after last weekend’s wintry mix, things could get even colder; forecasts say that the temperature is likely to dip into the teens across the northern parts of the state.
The good news for those who have grown weary of wearing layers (and potentially having their electricity knocked out) is that the freeze will be very quickly followed by weather that Texans are more accustomed to. Following the low temperatures, next week is predicted to be significantly warmer—so much so that one might be tempted to stow away their goose down puffer jackets for good.
