A man was shot early Sunday morning during a brawl just steps from Area 3 Police Headquarters on the North Side, but his cellphone may have saved him from a more serious injury after it stopped one of the bullets fired at him.
Officers initially responded to calls of a group fighting outside a bar in the 3200 block of North Western Avenue around 3:20 a.m., but a report of a person shot quickly followed.
In a statement, CPD said a 34-year-old man was in a verbal altercation with an unidentified man who produced a firearm and shot the victim before fleeing the scene. The victim sustained one gunshot wound to the hip and was transported to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in good condition, police said…
