SCHENECTADY — Gershon’s Deli and Catering, a mainstay in Schenectady’s Upper Union district since 1954, closed on Friday, Jan. 30, according to a social media post by the current owner.
Antonia “Toni” Nelson posted to the Gershon’s Deli Facebook page Sunday night that she made the “incredibly difficult decision” to close Gershon’s, citing “unfortunately, rising food costs, ongoing economic challenges (and) the lasting effects of COVID” as some of the reasons for the closure.
She became owner of the deli after the death of her father, Antonio “Tony” Lauria, on Sept. 9, 2016. She mentioned in the Facebook post that she “took over with one clear mission, to honor his legacy, keep his dream alive, and continue providing quality service and ‘good food for good people.’”…
