St. Joseph County gives kids teddy bears made of old deputy uniforms

CENTREVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — Children in St. Joseph County who have been in traumatic situations have received handmade teddy bears created from retired deputy uniforms.

The teddy bears were made by Costuras Karla, who crafted the stuffed bears from brown deputy uniforms that have been taken out of service. Each comes with a St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Office patch.

They go to children who have “experienced victimization or traumatic situations,” according to the sheriff’s office.

“What once represented law enforcement duty has now been transformed into something deeply personal, a source of reassurance, safety, and hope for a child facing one of the most difficult moments of their life,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a release…
