The Oak Ridge Boys recently performed at the Grand Ole Opry and shocked fans by bringing out a surprise guest. So, who was it, and what was the reaction from the audience when they saw the person in question? Keep reading for all of the exciting details.
Oak Ridge Boys Shock Opry Fans With Surprise Guest
The Grand Ole Opry has seen many exceptional guests and performers over the last one hundred years. It has celebrated milestones and honored country royalty. Fans from all over have stopped in to mark occasions, and it is a monumental experience. On Friday, January 30th, 2026, The Oak Ridge Boys performed at the Opry in Nashville, Tennessee, and they brought along a very special surprise. Those who were in attendance were in utter and complete shock.
Richard Sterban, who was known as the bass singer for the band, had taken leave due to a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. This all happened back in March 2025, and he felt it best to focus on his treatment rather than touring. Therefore, Rochard has been gone since May, so Tim Duncan and Aaron McCune have taken over his vocals. However, he made a special appearance for the Friday show at the Opry, and the audience went crazy. They were thrilled to see him back on his feet and performing, seemingly doing quite well.

A lot of prayers were sent to Richard Sterban for continued healing, as Oak Ridge Boys fans wanted to see him thrive. They were hopeful that he would make it back out onto the road in the near future, but time will tell how his health is holding up. For now, everyone just seems grateful that he was able to make it to the stage for the surprise appearance.
A Great Night Out
Oak Ridge Boys fans were thrilled to see Richard Sterban at the Grand Ole Opry. It has not been an easy time for the band, given that Joe Bonsall passed away two years ago.
