Lawsuit Alleges Lenape District Failed to Protect Cherokee High School Student from Teacher Abuse

A former Cherokee High School student is suing the Lenape Regional High School District, alleging administrators failed to stop years of grooming and sexual abuse by a teacher while she was a minor.

The civil complaint, filed Jan. 14 in New Jersey Superior Court, names former Latin teacher Brantley Cesanek along with the Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education, the district itself, and Cherokee High School. The woman, identified in court records as Jane Doe A.H., alleges the abuse began when she was a minor and continued through multiple school years.

According to the lawsuit, Cesanek began targeting the student after she joined the school’s Latin Club, which he supervised. The complaint states the program’s small size allowed the teacher repeated and largely unsupervised access to the student during the school day…
