Inside one worker co-op’s struggle to open a cannabis dispensary in RI

COVENTRY – Inside a former barbeque restaurant in Coventry, Taylor Gallant can see the bones of a cannabis dispensary.

The bar stays where it is but will be laden with cash registers. The fume hoods in the back and the other restaurant equipment will have to go. The walk-in freezer can be turned into the vault for the goods, and the booths will be ripped out, creating open space.

While for years the group had been working to put in an application for one of the six worker cooperative licenses to be issued by the state after legislation creating retail dispensaries passed in 2022, it was all a waiting game for applications to open…
