This bird travels thousands of miles to winter in N.J. | Gloucester County Nature Club

So we are driving through the farm fields of Salem County. It’s winter, most areas are free of snow, but there’s a distant field covered in white.

Those are snow geese! A flock of hundreds, maybe thousands. One of the most impressive sights in a New Jersey winter landscape, and a reminder of the abundant bird life seen by the earliest settlers.

Get closer and look at an individual bird. It’s white, slightly smaller than a Canada goose, has black on the outer wing feathers, a pink bill, often a “muddy” face from grubbing for food…
