Small earthquake reported south of St. Louis Sunday; no injuries or damage

VALMEYER, Ill. — A small earthquake shook eastern Missouri and western Illinois Sunday night. The magnitude 2.0 quake struck at 8:23 p.m. near Herculaneum, along the northern edge of the broader Illinois Basin–Ozark Dome region, which borders the more active New Madrid seismic zone.

The quake occurred about 7 miles underground, roughly 4 miles east-southeast of Herculaneum and 5 miles east-northeast of Festus.

Small earthquakes occur in this region about once or twice a year. The strongest recorded event here, a magnitude 5.4 earthquake in 1968, caused damage in southern Illinois. No damage or injuries were reported from Monday night’s quake. Report if you felt it here…
