26-year sentence for man who shot sleeping victim in Machesney Park

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A man who shot a 21-year-old victim in the back while he was sleeping has been sentenced to spend 26 years in prison.

According to the Winnebago County State’s Attorney’s Office, around 4:30 a.m. on August 24th, 2024, Meovonte Cooper, 23, drove to the victim’s apartment in the 1000 block of Minns Drive, in Machesney Park.

He drove into the yard, then climbed up on his vehicle’s roof to reach a second-floor balcony, and then fired multiple shots through the window, hitting the victim who was sleeping on a couch inside the apartment…
