COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) — New federal work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program took effect in South Carolina this week, expanding the number of recipients who must work or participate in job programs to continue receiving food assistance.
The changes stem from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law on July 4, 2025, by President Donald Trump. Under the new rules, able-bodied adults without dependents ages 18 to 64 must work or take part in approved work activities for at least 80 hours a month to receive SNAP benefits beyond three months in a 36-month period.
