For years now, and up until very recently, ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick had been fighting the federal government, contesting that he owed large sums of money in restitution to the city of Detroit stemming from his 2013 public corruption conviction.
But in a new development, Detroit U.S. District Judge Nancy G. Edmunds said in a court filing Monday that Kilpatrick and the U.S. Attorney’s Office have both agreed that he owes $823,649.09 in restitution and that his pension benefits and other income are subject to garnishment.
Edmunds wrote that the court has approved a payment plan, but it was placed under seal because it contains detailed information about his finances that the government cannot publicly disclose under privacy laws…
