Ray Ware was getting his children ready for school in the early hours of Jan. 21 when federal immigration agents raided a nearby building. An agent soon after fired rounds outside his Willowbrook apartment.
Neighboring schools went into lock down. Dozens of federal agents, some carrying assault rifles, closed access to 126th Street after the man they sought to arrest crashed outside Ware’s apartment. Residents of neighboring buildings, confused and angry, weren’t allowed to leave, Ware said.
Ware’s message to elected officials? Children shouldn’t have to get ready for school fearing for their family’s safety. “Communities need to be safer, especially for the kids,” he said…
