Phoenix breaks 23-year-old heat record as temperatures surge above normal

PHOENIX — A daily heat record that stood for 23 years in Phoenix was broken on Sunday.

The temperature peaked at 85 degrees at 3:09 p.m. at Phoenix Sky Harbor International, which the National Weather Service (NWS) uses for the city’s official readings. The previous record was 83 degrees and was set in 2003.

Temperatures have been warm this weekend as Phoenix reached 81 degrees on Saturday, about 12 degrees above normal. Phoenix finished the month of January with an average temperature of 61.1 degrees, making it the fourth warmest January on record, according to the NWS…
