Schenectady deli closes after more than 60 years of business

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10)– A beloved Schenectady business has closed its doors after more than 60 years of service. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Gershon’s Deli and Caterers announced its closure, effective on Friday, January 30.

According to Antonia Nelson, closing the business was not an easy decision to make, but rising costs and economic challenges caused her to close.

“For more than 60 years, Gershon’s has been shaped by the people who walked through our doors. Every employee, customer, client, and friend has played a role in our story and our success,” Nelson wrote in the post. “Unfortunately, rising food costs, ongoing economic challenges, the lasting effects of COVID, and the loss of my final opportunity this week have left me with no other choice.”

According to the business’ website, Gershon’s Deli was established in 1954 by Irv and Lena Gershon. In 1973, the business was sold to their nephew Bob Lessner, who then sold it to his “adopted son and long-time employee Tony Lauria.” Lauria’s daughters Nelson and Bridget Battease then took the business over…
