During April and May 2025, the Gluckstadt Police Department, working with a confidential informant, made multiple drug buys from Bess. On one occasion, Bramlett said Bess sold the confidential informant 2,000 dosage units of methamphetamine. On another, Bess sold 5,000 pills containing methamphetamine to the informant.

According to Bramlett, Bess was later stopped by Gluckstadt police for a traffic offense. He gave officers consent to search his vehicle, and they discovered more than 11,000 methamphetamine pills in the trunk of the car.
