Douglas County Sheriff’s Office warns homeowners to check sprinkler systems for stolen valves

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is warning homeowners to check their sprinkler systems after a recent increase in thefts targeting backflow valves, a piece of equipment that prevents contamination of drinking water.

Deputies said suspects have been entering residential neighborhoods and using electric saws to cut brass and copper backflow valves from irrigation systems, then selling the metal for scrap.

The warning comes after deputies arrested two people early Monday morning after a resident reported hearing what sounded like a power saw outside their home around 1:30 a.m.

“They heard what they thought was a power saw outside,” Undersheriff Jason Kennedy said. “That’s always strange at 1:23 (a.m.) outside your residence. And then they saw two individuals down by an irrigation system.”…
