Santa Ana man sentenced to 10 years for 2019 jail attack linked to Mexican Mafia

SANTA ANA, California — A 54-year-old Santa Ana man associated with the Mexican Mafia was sentenced to 120 months in federal prison for his role in a 2019 jail attack, according to a press release from the United States Attorney’s Office.

Robert Amezcua, also known as “Flaco,” was sentenced by United States District Judge Fred W. Slaughter after being found guilty in January 2024 of committing a violent crime in aid of racketeering (VICAR), specifically attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. The attack occurred on December 31, 2019, at the Theo Lacy Facility in Orange, where Amezcua, a member of the Madison Park clique of the Santa Ana-based Lopers street gang, participated in the assault of another inmate. Amezcua delivered more than 20 blows to the victim while another inmate used a razor blade to slash the victim’s throat. The victim survived the attack.

Amezcua is one of 31 defendants charged in a 33-count federal grand jury indictment brought in 2022. Among the other defendants, Mher Darbinyan, 50, also known as “Hollywood Mike,” of Valencia, is serving a 30-month federal prison sentence after pleading guilty in January 2024 to conspiracy to commit assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
