In a candid revelation from his upcoming memoir, “Young Man in a Hurry,” California Governor Gavin Newsom is pulling back the curtain on the struggles within his first marriage to Kimberly Guilfoyle. Set to hit shelves on February 24th, the book reportedly reveals Newsom as a distant spouse, admitting he was merely “going through the motions.”
Guilfoyle, a San Francisco native, boasts an impressive resume, having served as a Fox News TV host and prosecuting attorney, and is currently the Trump administration’s ambassador to Greece. Her personal life has also made headlines, including a high-profile engagement to Donald Trump Jr. from 2020 to 2024, which was quietly called off.
Newsom and Guilfoyle’s marriage, which lasted from 2001 to 2005, saw them emerge as a California power couple, particularly after Newsom’s election as San Francisco mayor in 2003. According to excerpts from the memoir, Newsom claims he married Guilfoyle during a period where he was “skilled at repressing my feelings,” and that “Kimberly allowed me this emotional distance.” He described their wedding as simply going “through all the motions until the motions led me right up to the altar.”
Their divorce filing cited career demands and geographical distance as factors. Newsom later confessed to an extramarital affair with his then-deputy chief of staff’s wife, which he describes in his book as “the worst betrayal of my life.”
He reflects, “I thought of myself as a single guy who happened to be mayor. Had my head been on straight, I would have seen it was the other way around.”
While addressing his marriage to Guilfoyle, Newsom remains largely private about other past relationships in the memoir. He briefly touched on a short-lived romance with 19-year-old model Brittanie Mountz, dismissing it to The New York Times as “only went on a few dates.” He also recounts breaking off a relationship with actress Sofia Milos at the advice of oil tycoon Gordon Getty, who reportedly deemed her “wasn’t suited to him.”
