Fort Wayne mother remembered by co-workers, family after fatal apartment fire

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – More than a week after a fatal apartment fire claimed the life of a young Fort Wayne mother, her community is coming together to remember her vibrant spirit and support the baby boy she left behind.

21-year-old Shaylea Gaona, died from smoke inhalation in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 25, when a fire broke out at Coventry Court West Apartments on Meadows Drive.

Those who knew Shaylea say she had just started building the life she dreamed of for herself and her 10-month-old son, Kyzir.

“She wasn’t excited to turn 21 just to go to the bars,” said Kyle Dunafin her district manager at Dairy Queen, where Shaylea worked. “It was a whole thing of starting her life.”…
