Former MI Dems treasurer accused of $123,000 in embezzlement and fraud as woman’s conservator

GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A former Michigan Democratic Party treasurer is accused of stealing upwards of $123,000 while acting as a woman’s conservator, court records show.

Traci Kornak, 62, of Comstock Park, was arraigned Tuesday on three criminal counts: embezzlement of between $50,000 and $100,000 from a vulnerable adult; embezzlement between $1,000 and $20,000 from a vulnerable adult and false pretenses between $1,000 and $20,000.

Authorities allege the embezzlement happened from 2020 to 2023 while the victim, Rosalene Burd, was a resident at an assisted living facility near Grand Rapids, court documents show. Burd has since died.

Court documents say that an audit of Burd’s finances during the conservatorship revealed questionable transactions totaling $123,290.17. Of that, the documents allege, more than $85,000 went straight from Burd’s accounts into Kornak’s. The audit also raised flags about $10,000 spent on things that weren’t for Burd and more than $14,000 in overpayments for attendant care.
