Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority efforts moving forward amid budget concerns

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — City Council members support moving forward with plans to redevelop the aging public housing communities of the St. Paul’s area, even with budget challenges on the horizon.

Friday at their retreat, Dr. Susan Perry, the city’s director of Housing and Community Development, laid out a tentative timeline that could be used to transform the Calvert Square and Young Terrace neighborhoods.

Combined, the communities, built in 1957 and 1953 respectively, account for 1,062 public housing units where more than 2,500 people currently live. Both are past their useful life…
