CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Charleston Police Department released its annual crime report showing a reduction in crime over the past five years.
In Charleston, crime dropped 36.3% city-wide from 2020 to 2025, with a strong decrease in homicides, aggravated assault, robbery, and sex offenses.
Non-violent crime, such as burglary and motor vehicle theft, has also trended down over the last five years, with the department crediting its community partners.
“The biggest lesson is public safety doesn’t happen in isolation by any means,” said Lt. Anthony Gibson, with the Charleston Police Department. “What we mean by that is we did not do this alone, and we know that. You have a lot of people who are more comfortable coming to the police. We have phenomenal support from our elected officials, the mayor’s office, and we know that we can’t do this alone.”
