California Calls for Civil Rights Investigation into CMS’ Hospice Fraud Hunt

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has filed a civil rights complaint against U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz, alleging that hospice fraud investigations in the state may be targeting certain racial communities.

The complaint was recently filed with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in response to Oz’s allegations related to fraudulent activity in Los Angeles County, particularly among Russian and Armenian businesses.

Through the civil rights complaint, the governor’s office is seeking an investigation to address potential violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which stipulates that no person should be discriminated against based on race, color or national origin.
