Stuck with squatters: LA County property owners face time-consuming and costly evictions

LOS ANGELES — Landlord Rob Casares bought a four-unit complex in South Los Angeles about 15 years ago with the hopes it would be a good investment and housing option for people in the area.

But Casares is fed up after he said he’s evicted squatters from three of the units over a span of about three years.

Squatters are people who break into homes, stay there for a period of time and refuse to pay rent or leave — usually triggering a formal court process to evict them. Spectrum News spoke to attorneys and landlords like Casares, who said that process is often prolonged by a court backlog and limited law-enforcement resources to carry out evictions…
