US Coast Guard urges ‘extreme caution’ due to ice in Ohio River

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Unusually icy conditions on the Ohio River prompted the US Coast Guard to issue safety warnings to river traffic and to the public.

“Ice floes and sheet ice can shift rapidly with changing river levels and currents, creating hazardous conditions for both commercial and recreational vessels,” Public Affairs Officer for the USCG Sector Ohio Valley LCDR Steve Leighty said in a press release. “Ice accumulation may restrict maneuverability, damage hulls and propulsion systems, and obstruct navigation channels, particularly near bends, bridges, fleeting areas, and lock approaches.”
