Arkansas Department of Corrections temporarily lifts ban on paper to inmates

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A rule set to go into effect in the state prison system on Sunday has been put on temporary hold by the Department of Corrections.

The rule would disallow Arkansas inmates from receiving paper products such as books and magazines. It was intended to address how paper products were being used to introduce drugs and other contraband into the prison system, officials said.

The suspension comes from the new rules’ interference with an existing DOC administrative rule. Spokesperson Rand Champion said the administrative rule that requires any printed matter to be sent to an inmate is subject to inspection.
