Springfield’s Dickerson Park Zoo staff mourns the death of lioness

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Edited News Release/KY3) – Shetani, a 19-year-old lioness at Dickerson Park Zoo, was humanely euthanized on February 3.

Shetani had been under the supervision of the zoo’s veterinarian team for chronic kidney disease. As her quality of life continued to decline due to her failing kidneys and increased cognitive dysfunction, the animal care team made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her.

“We had been managing Shetani’s kidney disease for the past year and monitoring her very closely for the past few months for signs of cognitive dysfunction,” said Dickerson Park Zoo associate veterinarian Dr. Shelby Nester. “Shetani was always so playful and eager to train, which made providing her medical care much easier. Her love of meat and all the attention she could get made it so rewarding to work with her. She was a big personality and will be greatly missed.”…
