New York is expected to remain in a deep freeze for the coming week, but forecasters say there is a strong chance that temperatures will warm up in mid-February as the polar jet stream shifts overhead.

Temperatures are likely to trend above normal statewide from Feb. 11 to 17, according to an outlook report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center. Forecast models indicate the eastern United States could see warmer weather after an extended stretch of frigid temperatures that has felt especially brutal compared with recent mild winters.

The jet stream currently funneling cold air into the region may move north by the middle of the month, allowing relatively warmer air to return to the Capital Region and Hudson Valley, said Michael Main, a National Weather Service meteorologist based in Albany…
