ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — State environmental officials are restricting the movement of firewood and oak trees in parts of the Finger Lakes after a tree-killing disease was found in new areas.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said oak wilt, a fast-spreading fungal disease, was recently discovered in parts of Yates and Ontario counties. As a result, DEC expanded its quarantine area to include the entire towns of Middlesex, Italy and South Bristol, along with parts of Bristol and Naples.
The restrictions mean oak firewood, logs and branches from those areas cannot be moved outside the quarantine zone, unless they are specially treated. The goal is to stop the disease from spreading to healthy trees…
